Broken beauty

We are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees. Often we don’t want to admit it. We hide it from everyone else. But believe me, you are not alone. We are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees.

Our smiles become stronger through pain. Every scar bears a memory. Some of them tear up even after a long time. But believe me you are not alone. We are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees.

I am currently sitting at the airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. I travel alone to an island far away. But whenever I travel alone, I meet people. It usually starts with a smile and ends in a long conversation. I don’t know why but strangers like to talk to strangers. Knowing that you may never see each other again opens up a special kind of freedom. Telling someone about our life without having to censor anything. Everyone who thinks airport conversations cant go deep, is wrong. They are authentic. And we rarely find that in our usual environment. Strangers like to talk to strangers. And I understand why!

I just had one of those conversations with Paul, who I met here at the airport. We started talking about life, very unplanned and spontaneously. About joys and tears, meaning and passion, pain and strength.

And again I see it clearly. Like in a broken mirror that reflects truth. We are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees. Often we don’t want to admit it. We hide it from others. But believe me, you are not alone. We are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees.

But broken glass also reflects beauty. Maybe even more beautiful than a whole mirror. But we all need something – more precisely SOMEONE – who holds us together. So that we don’t fall apart. So we don’t pass away. We are made to reflect beauty. The beauty of our creator.

Broken glass is free of pride and full of humility. And that’s beauty. The beauty of our creator in us. A humble heart. Injured but not broken. Despised and yet of great use.

I am grateful for all the cracks. For all scars. They make me more beautiful, stronger and wiser. They point me to Jesus my Savior, whose heart was broken for my guilt. Every scar reminds me of the pain my Jesus suffered. His heart broke because of me. Out of love. Out of pure, unconditional love.

Believe me, we are all broken somewhere. And that’s because of the guilt of our sins. Sins that we could not bear. No matter how strong you seem – I know we are all broken somewhere, in places nobody can see. You just have to look. Stop hiding yourself. Jesus recognized your heart a long time ago. Let it go. Show your scars and your broken heart. He alone can heal it. He transforms your broken glass into something that reflects his beauty.

Believe me, we are all broken somewhere. In places that nobody sees. But we are called to reflect the beauty of our creator. It is only through scars that our hearts become as beautiful as his.
